Question
Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Dear Scholar, I live in London, UK. Alhamdulillah more and more sisters are wearing Hijab in my area. However, I fear about one thing, the Burkah or Jilbab they wear is attractive and could distract opposite sex. They contain many types of colours, design, etc. Please advice us as brother and to thses sister who are the consumers of such attractive products.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
We have already issued Fatwa 83702 clarifying the characteristics of Hijab (the Islamic outfit mandated on a Muslim woman), so please refer to it.
Among these characteristics is that it should not be a beauty in itself which leads men to be tempted by the woman who is wearing it, which contradicts the objective for which Hijab was mandated.
If the situation is as you mentioned in the question that these sisters are wearing their Hijab as described, then one should advise them to fear Allaah and not to go out with this Hijab in front of marriageable men. Moreover, we remind their guardians not to allow them to wear it, and we advise all the Muslims to lower their gaze from what Allaah has forbidden and not to look at such sisters.
Finally, we ask Allaah to guide us all to the correct path, make us steadfast on the truth, and protect us from afflictions and temptations, both hidden and apparent ones.
