Al-Bukhari’s Hadeeth about musical instruments

Question

Assalamu Alaikum, I have read that the following hadith by the Prophet SAWS is weak: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Among my ummah there will be people who will regard as permissible adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari. I also read that the narration is mawqoof in Bukhari but the chain of narrators is complete in other books of hadith. Can you please provide the saheeh version of the hadith that has a complete chain? JazakumAllahu kheirun.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This Hadeeth is reported by Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him as a Mu’allaq Hadeeth, which is a Hadeeth that is missing one or more narrators from the chain of narrators [from its beginning to its end], and not as a Mawqoof Hadeeth which is a Hadeeth that is attributed to the Companion [and not to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam].

However, Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him considered this Hadeeth as Mu’allaq in an authoritative manner. Al-Haafith Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him stated that any Mu’allaq Hadeeth narrated by Al-Bukhari in an authoritative manner is ruled to be authentic to whom he attributed it.

Moreover, this Hadeeth was reported as Mawsool (with a complete chain of narrators) in books other than Saheeh Al-Bukhari, and it is Abu Daawood may Allaah have mercy upon him who narrated it as Mawsool in his Sunnan with the wording: “There will be among my nation people who would make lawful the use of Khazz (a cloth woven of silk blended with another fiber) and silk …and other people amongst them will be deformed to apes and pigs until the Day of Judgment.

Also, among those scholars who considered this Hadeeth as Mawsool is Al-Ismaa’eeli in his “Mustakhraj”, and Ibn Hibbaan in his “Saheeh”, and At-Tabaraani in his “Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabeer”.

Furthermore, a group of scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them classified it as Saheeh [authentic], like Ibn As-Salah, Ibn Al-Qayyim, Ibn Hajar and others.

Allaah Knows best.
