Question
I am a dentist and my job offered me (disability insurance), which is provided by the job and I contribute some portion to it. Disability insurance is an insurance that pay me a percentage of my salary, in case I became disabled. Is Disability insurance allowed or not?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
It appears that this insurance is a kind of forbidden health insurance and we have already issued Fatwa 82599 clarifying the ruling on it. Also, please refer to Fatwa 81425 on other kinds of insurance.
However, in case one is obliged to participate in this insurance, he is only permitted to take back the exact amount that he originally paid without any profit [interest].
