Fatwa CenterA scholarship offered by a brewery
Question
I am a student sponsored by an organization. They offered an scholarship known as Genies which I know that is a company which manufactures beer. Am I allowed to take it [know that my parents are unable to pay my fees].
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
If the money of this company is mixed, meaning it does not produce beer only but it carries out other permissible activities then there is no harm to take this grant. Some scholars
permitted benefiting from the person whose income is mixed from permissible and forbidden resources. However, if the money of this company is purely forbidden, meaning that its activity is limited to manufacturing intoxicants only and other forbidden products, then it is not permissible for you to benefit from this grant unless you are poor and need this money.
