Has Muslim housemate who does not practice Islam, drinks alcohol, etc.

Question

I have a question. Currently I am living in overseas I have a housemate he is Muslim but he never pray and he drinks alcohol some more he has a girl friend and some times he brings her at home and she sleep over. Now he is doing some Haraam things at home, I told him so many times do not do those things but he doesn't. My question is: I always pray and read Qur'aan at home, now I'm afraid that may God accept my prayer or not because he (my housemate) is doing such Haraam things at home? Please help me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

There is no relation between the disobedience of your friend and the validity of your prayer. Allaah says (interpretation of meaning): {And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.}[6:164]. Allaah also says (interpretation of meaning): {Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained}[74:38]. So if you perform your prayer with its conditions, pillars and obligations, then it is correct and we hope that Allaah will accept it. However, you have to advise your friend again, who does not pray and drinks alcohol and so on. Tell him to fear Allaah and inform him that not performing prayers renders a person a non-Muslim, according to the majority of scholars. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The pact between us and them is prayer, so whoever abandons it is a disbeliever." [An-Nasaa'ee] He also said: "Between a person and disbelief is the abandonment of prayers." [Al-Daaraqutni] Allaah says about alcohol (interpretation of meaning): {…indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allaah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.}[5:90]. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: "Whoever drinks alcohol (or any intoxicant) in this life and does not repent, it will be forbidden for him in the Hereafter (i.e. will not enter paradise)." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) further said: "A fornicator (or adulterer) when he fornicates (or commits adultery) is not a believer, and a person who drinks alcohol is not a believer when he drinks it". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] So you have to explain to him the seriousness of the matter and inform him about the above texts; if this does good to him, all perfect Praise be to Allaah, but if you see that he rejects what you are telling him, then there is no good for you in living with him and keeping company with him, as it might be possible that you will be affected by socializing with him. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Do not befriend except with a Muslim and it is only a pious person who should eat your food." [Abu Ya'laa]

Allaah knows best.
