Fatwa CenterColoring the hair black, its original color
Question
I know it is Haram to color the hair black. I colored my hair with a different color. Unfortunately the color is permanent, I was wondering if it was haram to color it black so I can make it return back to its original color which was black. I am confused. Please verify this question for me.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
The people of knowledge differed regarding dying hair black. Some said that it is forbidden and some said that it is disliked.
However, the preponderant opinion according to us (Islamweb) is that it is forbidden.
The difference of opinion that is mentioned is regarding dying white or grey hair black. But if the matter is to return the hair into its original colour, then it seems that there is no harm in that.
