I want to know how he can prove to me that he is following Shariah? He sent me an email and promised me that he has been fasting since the beginning of Ramadan, and that he has downloaded from the Internet how to pray. He is not actively seeking knowledge about the religion on his own, he is doing what I tell him to do. I think he is doing it for me, ie that if I leave him tomorrow he will not continue (but I can't speak for what is in his heart)... but he is willing to do whatever it takes for me to stay with him, and maybe after a while Allah will 'Yihdeeh'. What proof do I need from him to make it Halal for me to stay with him?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
As we have mentioned to you in the previous Fatwa, if a person does not abide by the Islamic jurisdictions, like the prayer, fasting, Zakat, Hajj, etc.…, then he is not considered a Muslim and it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to marry him. His claim of being a Muslim cannot be believed unless he shows that in reality and in practice (actions).
Besides, the intention of someone and the reality of his objective is something that only Allaah Knows.
People can only judge him by his apparent actions and behaviour. If we notice that he is keen on performing acts of worship and good deeds, and performing good acts at times of privacy, then this is a proof that his Imaan (belief) is true.
But if we notice that he is lazy in performing the prayer and acts of worship in front of the people, and when he is alone he does not do them, or we know that he is negligent and careless about religious matters, or is resentful about religious people, etc…, then we will conclude that he is just showing off and he is not a practising Muslim.
In any case, since you became the wife of that man, you should not get rid of him except with something certain. So, you should be vigilant and you should watch him without being noticed. If there is no Imaan in his heart, then he will soon lose patience with this showing off and pretending.
Allaah Knows best.
