Who was Hamza?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Below is brief information about Hamzah .
His name was Hamzah ibn ‘Abdul-Muttalib ibn Haashim ibn ‘Abd-Manaaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilaab ibn Murrah ibn Ka’b ibn Lu’ay ibn Ghaalib ibn Fihr ibn Maalik ibn An-Nadhr ibn Kinaanah. He was nicknamed ‘the Lion of Allaah’, and he was the uncle and foster brother of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
Ibn Is-haaq narrated that when Hamzah accepted Islam, the Quraysh realized that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was well-protected. It is reported in Mustadrak Al-Haakim from Jaabir that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “The leader of the martyrs is Hamzah.” Hamzah had been helping and protecting the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, from the time of his becoming Muslim till his death. He migrated to Madeenah, and the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, gave him the first flag in Islam. He participated in the Battle of Badr and fought courageously. He also participated in the Battle of Uhud and was martyred in it. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was greatly saddened by his death.
Imaam Ahmad and Ibn Maajah both, narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, heard the women of the Ansaar (Helpers) crying on their martyrs and said: “But Hamzah, no woman is crying over him.” They started crying on Hamzah too. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Tell them that they should not cry on any dead person after this day.”
Allaah Knows best.
