Story about Imam Shafi'e reading Qur'an during Ramadan

Question

I read a story about Imam Shafi'e, that he completed the Qur'an 60 times during Ramadan. That means he read the Qur'an twice or 60 parts daily. Normally 1 part will take 1 hour to read. Can you clarify this story?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

What is said about Shafi’e (may Allah have Mercy on him) that he used to finish reading the Qur’an during Ramadan 60 times, is reported by Ibn Abi Hatem and Ibn Assakir in his book ‘History’ from Rabi’ bin Sulaiman through many sources, who said that Shafi’e used to finish reading the Qur'an during Ramadan 60 times. Even if there is a hardship in doing so, but it is not impossible.

One of the contemporary people of knowledge, who is Sheikh Said bin Musafir Al Qahtani said that he completed reading the whole Qur'an from Fajr to just before Asr. On this basis, one can complete reading the whole Qur'an twice in 24 hours.

The questioner said that “It takes one hour to read a Juz’ (chapter)”. This differs according to different methods of reading and to speed. Some people could read one Juz’ in half an hour, and some people could read it (one Juz’) in less than half an hour.

Allah knows best.
