Question
I work as a purchaser for a company and my main job is to purchase goods from supplier for my company . At year end these people often give me goodies, money in the hope of maintaining good bussiness relation with me and my company. Is my acceptance of these materialssimilar to receiving bribe? few facts about the above:1] By accepting does not imply that the cost of product to my company is raised.2] Can I accept them as gifts and ways of maintaining good relationship with suppliers which is crucial for my organisation?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
If a company which you work for deputizes you to purchase its needs, it is your duty as its representative to do your best on behalf of the company, to buy the best and cheapest. Thus, if those gifts that you receive may cause some harm to your company concerning prices or quality of goods you buy for your company or you stipulate that with firms that you purchase from them, then it becomes Haram to receive those gifts, and vice versa.
However, we prefer that you avoid such situation since it may lead you to violate what we have stated above some day.
Also, you are to abide by the conditions that your company sets for you to purchase; as their agent you have no authority against what you are required to do.
