The Marriage of Bilaal

Question

I am interested in any information on the marriage, if any, of Bilal (Radiya Allahu Anhu), the first Muezzin of Islam. Please give any details and sources of information.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Reading about the lives of the Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) brings happiness to the heart, delighting and uplifting the reader. Bilaal ibn Rabaah may Allaah be pleased with him is counted among the most prominent Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). One of the early Muslims, he was also among the faithful people who migrated with the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). He prayed towards both Qiblahs (directions of prayer), Baytul-Maqdis and Baytullaah Al-Haraam (the Ka'bah). He witnessed all the battles with the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and kept close to him when he was in residence as well as when he traveled. He was his Mu'athhin (caller for prayer).

Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him said in his book Al-Isaabah fee Tamyeez As-Sahaabah, "The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) designated him as a brother to Abu 'Ubaydah ibn Al-Jarraah."

As for his marriage, Ibn Al-Atheer may Allaah have mercy upon him says, "After Bilaal may Allaah be pleased with him went on Jihaad to Syria and stayed there, he once accompanied one of his brothers to Daariya – a village in Syria – where the tribe of Khawlaan live. He said to them, 'We came to you proposing for marriage. We were disbelievers and Allaah guided us to Islam. We were slaves and Allaah freed us; we were poor and Allaah made us rich. Now, if you marry us, Alhamdulillaah (Praise is for Allaah), and if you turn us back, Laa hawla wala quwwata illa billaah.' The tribe accepted their offer and married them."

It is also said that he married the sister of 'Abdur-Rahmaan ibn 'Awf may Allaah be pleased with him. Ibn Al-Atheer may Allaah have mercy upon him says that Bilaal may Allaah be pleased with him did not have children. He died in Damascus and was buried near Baab As-Sagheer .To know more about his life, you can consult the books of Seerah (biography), such as Siyar A'laam An-Nubalaa' , Al-Isaabah, Asadul-Ghaabah, etc.

Allaah Knows best.
