Question
One of my friend got into fight with his wife. Then he went into separate room and he said, "I left you, I left you, I left you" but at that time he was all alone in his room and no one heard him not even his wife. Also, he did not use the word "Tallaq" or "Divorce" when he said, "I left you". Now he asked me if him and his wife are divorced? He is still living with his wife right now.At that he told me that he only said the sentence "I left you" one time and that is why I told him that his divorced didn't happen because first of all he did not use the word "Tallaq", secondly no one else heard him, and third he only said one time. But now he told me that he said the sentence three times. Please explain if he is still married or not and what is the law of divorce in Islam?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
We warn the questioner of giving Fatwa without making sure of the reality. This practice causes misery in this Life and Hereafter as well. It is reported from one of the Prophet's (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) companions that: 'The most daring of you to issue a Fatwa is the most daring for the Hell-Fire'.
As for the words of your friends (I left you), these are the allusive words. The divorce with such words is not effective unless the husband intends divorce. If he repeats the words intending divorce and the number then his divorce is effective. If he intends by the repetition of the words only to confirm the matter of divorce then it is considered only one divorce as he had intended.
Know that validity and effectiveness of a divorce do not depend on hearing someone. Whenever a husband pronounces the clear words of Talaq or allusive words with the intention of divorce, his wife becomes forbidden for him, whether someone hears it or not.
