Is It an Obligation to Denounce Evil?

Question

It's fardh to denounce evil. On social media there is so much haram that a person would spend hours trying to denounce evil everytime he saw it as someone can see hundreds of posts in 10 minutes. Must he comment that something is haram everytime.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Denouncing evil is required from every Muslim to the best of his ability. If one cannot remove evil with their hand, they should speak out against it. If they are unable to do even that, denouncing it in their heart will suffice, just as it is mentioned in the Hadith reported by Muslim in his Sahih, that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whosoever among you sees an evil, he should change it with his hand, and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith.

As for the evils found on social media, if you are certain, or predominantly believe that messaging the content creator, or commenting on their post will be heard and noticed by them, or that your comment may benefit others who visit their page, you should denounce it to the best of your ability. This can be done by writing a comment, sending a message, or similar actions. Moreover, denouncing may become obligatory if you know that no one else will do so except you.

However, beyond this it is sufficient for you to denounce it in your heart, as if you start searching after every evil post and attempt to refute them all through messages and comments, it will consume your time and distract you from more important matters, especially since such evils have become widespread. Indeed, Islamic law regards the widespread affliction (‘Umum al Balwa) as a reason for promoting ease, reducing burdens, and preventing unnecessary difficulty for believers.

Allah knows best.
