Question
I recently underwent a curettage and I experienced blood discharge for two days. The blood then ceased for five days and again red blood was interruptedly discharged. Am I required to make up for the lost prayers during these two days? Please advise. May Allaah reward you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
If a trustworthy physician decided that the blood discharged was the result of the curettage, then it should not prevent you from praying, fasting, as well as other acts of worship which one has to do when s/he is not in a state of major impurity (requires Ghusl [major ablution by taking a shower]). If the blood discharge was not due to curettage, then it is menstrual blood, even if it was interruptedly discharged, as long as it does not exceed the maximum period of menstruation, which is fifteen days. The blood discharged after this period is vaginal bleeding. It is also considered vaginal bleeding when it is discharged before the end of the minimum period of purity. If the blood is discharged after completion of the menstrual period and before the completion of the minimum period of purity, it is considered vaginal bleeding as well.
