A beardless Imaam of a Masjid here in Algeria was asked "How will you meet Allaah without a beard?" and he answered: "I will meet him with a sound heart." Then he quoted the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {But only one who comes to Allaah with a sound heart.} [Quran 29: 89] As such, he allows shaving the beard. What is the Sharee‘ah ruling?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Shaving the beard is prohibited. Ibn ‘Umar and others narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Trim mustaches and let the beards grow." [Al-Bukhari, Muslim, At-Tirmithi, An-Nasaa’i, Abu Daawood and Ahmad] The wording of another narration reads: "Do unlike the polytheists, let the beards grow and shave mustaches.”
Consequently, a Muslim is not permitted to shave his beard, particularly when he is an Imaam of a Masjid. Also, how will a person meet Allaah with a sound heart while he is going against the command of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam? Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):
· {So let those beware who dissent from the Prophet's order, lest Fitnah strike them or a painful punishment.} [Quran 24: 63]
· {And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from.} [Quran 59: 7]
Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "All of my Ummah will enter Paradise except those who refuse." They (the Companions) said: "O Messenger of Allaah, who would refuse?" He said: "Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise and whoever disobeys me has refused." [Al-Bukhari and Ahmad]
Allaah Knows best.
