Allah gets angry with those who do not supplicate Him

Question

Is it true that Allaah gets angry with a person who does not ask him for anything or never supplicates for anything?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There was a hadeeth which was reported with this meaning; Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Whoever does not ask Allah, The Exalted, He gets angry with him.” [At-Tirmithi]

Al-Munaawi said in his commentary:

Regarding any matter, if a person does not ask Allah from His Bounty, Allah gets angry at him, because he is either in despair of the Mercy of Allah or is too arrogant to ask Him. Indeed, each of these two matters causes the anger of Allah. Some commentators said about the saying of Allah (which means): {Indeed, those who disdain My worship...} [Quran 40:60] that worship, here, means 'supplication', as Allah loves to be asked and that one persists in asking Him, and the one who does not ask Him, Allah hates him.

Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said:

This indicates that His pleasure is in asking Him and obeying Him, and if the Lord is pleased, then all goodness is in His pleasure, in the same manner that every affliction and calamity is in His anger. Supplication is worship, as Allah says (what means): {Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible…} [Quran 40:60] Allah gets angry at someone who does not ask Him the way a human gets angry if someone asks him… When the son of Adam is asked for something, he gets angry, whereas Allah gets angry if He is not asked. What a great difference between the two cases and woe to him who approaches the effect (the created) and stays away from the cause (the Creator)! Al-Haleemi said, ‘Since this is the case, a person should not stay one day and one night without supplicating because time is composed of day and night, which are repeated over and over again, so since abandoning supplication necessitates anger in principle, the least ruling on abandoning it for one day and one night is that it is disliked.

Allah knows best.
