My wife wears transparent clothes at home. Sometimes, we are both fasting and I tell her to cover her body as long as we are fasting. I tell her that it is wrong for her to wear such clothes, at least while I am fasting. However, she is not convinced. What does the religion say about this?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
There should be no harm in this if you are the only one who sees your wife in such clothes. This is because Islam allows married people to look at every part of each other’s bodies. It was reported on the authority of Bahz ibn Hakeem, on the authority of his grandfather, that he said to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, “O Messenger of Allaah! Who is permitted to see my `awrah (private parts) and who is not?” The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said to him: “Keep your ‘awrah from being seen by anyone except for your spouse or female slave.”
However, if the appearance of your wife in transparent clothes arouses your sexual desire and might cause you to discharge semen or pre-seminal fluid, which invalidates your fast, then you need to stay somewhere in the house where you would not see her or you should request that she cover herself so that your fast would not be invalidated.
Allaah Knows best.
