Best methods of Da‘wah are kindness and leniency

Question

I live in the USA, in the same town where my uncle lives. My uncle does not pray at all, and I want to advise him to do so, but I do not know the right way to do this. He is very stubborn and is a difficult person to convince. Please advise me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

First of all, we supplicate Allaah The Almighty to reward you for being keen on guiding your uncle and calling him to pray which is the most important thing in a Muslim's life. In fact, prayer is the proof of one's faith and fear of Allaah. Muslims find happiness and tranquility in this worldly life through prayer. Hence, whoever abandons it, is deprived of goodness and would have wronged himself. In fact, he would no longer belong to Islam as ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him stated. [Abdur-Razzaaq]

We wish to remind the honorable questioner that in the field of Da‘wah, nothing is better than addressing people with kindness and leniency, especially in an environment like the one you live in and with a personality like that of your uncle.

Therefore, be kind to him and remind him about Allaah The Almighty, before Whom he will stand on a Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyone.

In addition, try to make use of effective audio material on this subject, by gifting him some of them. You could also visit him accompanying some people who are involved in the field of Da‘wah who can help you call him to Allaah.

Whatever happens, never despair, as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) told us that the hearts of human beings are controlled by Allaah, and He can change them as He likes. [Muslim]

Finally, we ask Allaah to support you and to guide your uncle. Allaah Knows best.
