Marriage and divorce are decreed by Allaah, The Exalted

Question

I am a 26-year-old girl. About a year ago, I was married to a boy according to my parents will. After a few days, my so called husband divorced me for no reason. On asking why, he said that it was a spell and that it was not in his control. He and his family apologized many times, and I had decided to marry him again, but after a few days, we noticed something strange in these people. I was confused then about what should be done next. My father and I prayed istikhaarah (prayer of consultation), and we both agreed that I should not remarry him. We then refused them. I believed that Allaah would help me afterwards, but I am in extreme pain after all this. At times, many bad ideas come to my mind, like that I should not obey my parents given that I married according to their wish, and, secondly, certain ideas of disbelief. Kindly help me in this battle of the mind and soul.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We implore Allaah, The Exalted, to bless you with patience and solace and to compensate you with a better husband; verily, Allaah, The Exalted, is Near, and He answers the supplications. You should know that marriage, just like any other worldly matter, is governed by the predestination and divine decrees of Allaah Almighty. When the Muslim’s heart is reassured with this belief, it serves as a great source of comfort and peace of mind; he would not despair over what has eluded him and would not exult in pride over what Allaah has given him.

Ibn ʻAbbaas may Allaah be pleased with him said: "One day, I was behind the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) (riding on the same mount) and he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, 'O young man, I shall teach you some words (of advice): Be mindful of Allaah, and Allaah will protect you. Be mindful of Allaah, and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allaah (alone); and if you seek help, then seek help from Allaah (alone). And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, then they would not benefit you except with what Allaah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, then they would not harm you except with what Allaah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.'" [Ahmad and At-Tirmithi - At-Tirmithi graded it hasan saheeh (good or sound)]

Whenever an adversity befalls a Muslim, they should recite the following supplication: "Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raajiʻoon. Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati, wakhluf li khairan minha." (Verily, we belong to Allaah and to Him we shall return. O Allaah! Compensate me in my affliction, recompense my loss and give me something better in exchange for it).

It has been reported on the authority of Umm Salamah may Allaah be pleased with her that she said:

"I heard the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) say, 'When a person suffers from a calamity and utters: Inna lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raajiʻoon. Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati, wakhluf li khairan minha (We belong to Allaah and to Him we shall return. O Allaah! Compensate me in my affliction, recompense my loss and give me something better in exchange for it.), then Allaah, The Exalted, surely compensates him with reward and a better substitute.'"

Umm Salamah added that when Abu Salamah (her husband) died, she said to herself, "Who is better than Abu Salamah, the companion of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )? Then Allaah inspired me to say the supplication (that the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had commanded us to say). So (Allaah, The Exalted, bestowed upon me a better substitute than him) I married the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )." [Ahmad - Al-Arnaa’oot graded it saheeh]

It should be noted that the woman is not entitled to give herself in marriage without the permission of her wali (legal guardian). You should also know that your parents are the keenest in seeking after that which serves your best interests; therefore, you should disregard such ill thoughts. Please refer to fataawa 199253 and 174507 about the remedy for the ideas of kufr (disbelief) from which you are suffering.

Allaah knows best.
