Has to Take Medicine during the Day In Ramadan

Question

What is the ruling concerning someone who is suffering from hepatitis and cannot stop taking the prescribed medicine? Is he allowed to break his fast in Ramadan? If yes, what are the consequent measures he has to observe?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and messenger.

If someone is already sick or has become sick (in Ramadan), he is allowed to break his fast in Ramadan if fasting might delay his recovery or worsen his sickness. Similarly, a sick person may break his fast if he cannot delay the time of taking medicine until night. Allah Says (what means): {So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them]—then an equal number of days [are to be made up].}[Quran 2: 184]

If the sickness is curable, by Allah’s will, then the sick person must make up for the missed days after he recovers, as stated by the aforementioned verse. If the sickness is incurable, the sick person shall feed a poor person per each day he misses.

Allah Knows best.
