It is Jibreel, may Allaah exalt his mention, who made Zamzam gush out

Question

Assalamualikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh... I happened to go over your article 'Zamzam Water: The history & significance -I' which is very enlightening, jazakumullah-u-khairan. However, I have a small doubt - the article first stated the following words "Ismaa'eel may Allaah exalt his mention kicked his tiny feet on the sand and the well of Zamzam was born out of the great Mercy of Allaah", while later on the following Hadith was quoted (quoting only an excerpt concerning to my question) "Gabriel hit the earth with his heel like this (Ibn 'Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him hit the earth with his heel to illustrate it), and so the water gushed out". My question is: Is there a contradiction in the former statement and the latter Hadith, in terms of whether it was Isma'eel's feet (or heel) that brought out the Zamzam water or was it Gabriel's heel (or wing) that gushed it out of the earth? Or are these two different narrations on the account of different Sahaba RA? Many thanks. Jazakumullah-u-khairan. Wassalamualikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh...

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is correct that Jibreel (Gabriel) may Allaah exalt his mention is the one who hit the earth with his heel. This is what is authentically reported in Saheeh Al-Bukhari and its wording is: “And she (Haajar, mother of Ismaa‘eel [Ishmael]) saw an angel at the place of Zamzam, digging the earth with his heel (or his wing), till water flowed from that place.

In another narration reported also by Al-Bukhari: “Jibreel hit the earth with his heel like this (Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him hit the earth with his heel to illustrate it), and so the water gushed out.

Al-Haafith Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him said in Fat'h Al-Baari: “And in the narration of Ibn Jurayj: “Jibreel hit the earth with his foot,” and in the Hadeeth of ‘Ali: “Then he dug the earth with his finger and thus the water gushed out.Ibn Is-haaq said in his narration: “Scholars claim that they always heard that it (the Well of Zamzam) was the dent of Jibreel.

Finally, we did not find any authentic narration that indicates that Ismaa‘eel may Allaah exalt his mention is the one who hit the earth with his foot.

Allaah Knows best.
