Is bleaching skin haram in Islam?

Question

is bleaching skin haram in islam

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Whitening the face may be done in one of the two following cases:
1- If a person has leprosy and the like, and he/she needs to do this for the purpose of treatment or in order to remove a malformation, then he/she is permitted to do so provided that this does not have side effects that are greater than the disease itself.

2- Intending by doing so to change the color of the skin in order to look more beautiful. In this case, it is not permissible to use this method or any other methods for this purpose as this is considered as changing the creation of Allaah The Almighty. An authentic Hadeeth (narration) reads: “Allaah has cursed those women who practice tattooing, those who get tattooed, those who pluck the hair of eyebrows, those who have their eyebrows hair plucked and those who make up gaps between their teeth to become more beautiful, changing thereupon the creation of Allaah.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
