These two verses are not contradictory

Question

i have a question. i was just going through some videos on youtube and i saw this video which pointed out some contradicitons in the Quran [ASTAGHFIRALLAH] I didn’t mean to open it but I just happened to click on it! example: [22:47] AND [70:4] one says "And they ask you to hasten on the torment! And Allah fails not His Promise. And verily, a day with your Lord is as a thousand years of what you reckon." and the other says "The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years," can you please explain to me the 2 verses. In one it says that one of Allah’s days is 1000 human years and the other says that one of Allah’s days is 50000 human years. Also I saw a lot of people on youtube who have converted from islam to christanity. Their parents were good practicing muslim but they say jesus saved them. If they were perfectly fine being muslim why doesn’t Allah stop them from going to the wrong way?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, it must be mentioned that there are no contradictions in the Quran whatsoever, praise be to Allaah, as the Quran was revealed from Allaah, the All-Knower, the All-Wise. Allaah Says (what means): {Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from [any] other than Allaah, they would have found within it much contradiction.} [Quran 4:82]

What might appear as contradiction in the Quran is only due to what may appear to us because our minds are incapable (of understanding it), otherwise there are no contradictions in reality.

The verse in Chapter Al-Hajj in which Allaah Says (what means): {And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count.} [Quran 22:47] does not contradict the verse in Chapter Al-Ma’aarij in which Allaah Says (what means): {The angels and the Spirit [i.e. Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years} [Quran 70:4]. To clarify this, what is meant by the day mentioned in the first verse is not the same thing which is meant by the day in the second verse. The days with Allaah are different: the Day of Judgment is equal to 50,000 years of this world as per Chapter Al-Ma’aarij, whereas each other day with Allaah equals 1,000 days of this world as per the verse in the Chapter Al-Hajj.

To conclude, the day in the first verse is different from the day in the second verse, this proves that what is meant in the two verses is different; so there is no contradiction as stated by the scholars.

Finally, the following matters should be mentioned:

1- A person who is not well-grounded in religious knowledge should avoid listening to the misconceptions of those who refute the truth. We have already warned against this in Fataawa 29347 and 88147.

2- If a person apostates from Islam due to his ignorance, then there are lots of non-Muslims who embrace Islam by their own will and without being forced. Therefore, you should not be deceived by some cases that are presented about those who apostated from Islam. It is just like a drop in a vast ocean of those who embraced Islam. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 92447.

3- There are many clear and evident contradictions that cannot be explained in other religions contrarily to the religion of Islam especially in the forged bibles. Therefore, our advice to those who criticize the religion of Islam and want to refute the Quran is that it is better for them to look at the contradictions that are in their religion to find out that their religion is false. For more benefit, please refer to Faatwa 91546, 88668 and 91490.

Allaah Knows best.
