A pilgrim is forbidden to wear a dress dyed with saffron

Question

What is the meaning of the Hadeeth which says that it is forbidden to wear a dress dyed with saffron? What is meant by “dyed with saffron”?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It seems that the questioner means the Hadeeth narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with them in which he said: "The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, forbade the Muhrim (a person who is in a state of Ihraam) to wear clothes dyed with Wars or saffron." [Al-Bukhari and others]

Briefly, the Hadeeth means that a person, man or woman, who is in a state of Ihraam to perform either Hajj or ‘Umrah is forbidden to wear perfumed clothes. Saffron and Wars are two types of perfume and therefore a person in a state of Ihraam is forbidden to wear clothes dyed with them.

Allaah Knows best.
