Fatwa CenterThe Teejaaniyyah: their beliefs and the Islamic ruling upon them
Question
An Imaam in Morocco and his followers, who follow the Teejaaniyyah order, recite some Athkaar (remembrances and mentionings of Allaah) after the ‘Asr prayer, especially on Fridays, accompanied by strange movements after which they spread a long white garment around them. Are these acts considered religious innovations? Is it permissible to pray behind this Imaam?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
The Teejaaniyyah are an innovating sect that belongs to Sufism, and its followers adhere to Sufi thoughts and beliefs. Also, they claim that they can physically meet the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, while awake in this worldly life. They also believe that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, honored them with a special prayer that was to be directed towards him, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, called Al-Faatih li maa ughliq (The opening of that which is (otherwise) shut, which they value highly).
The followers of the Teejaaniyyah do innovate in acts of worship, and, needless to say, every religious innovation is misguided. They recite certain supplications that are not mentioned in the Sharee‘ah and they oblige people to perform certain acts of worship at specific times without proof. They also have beliefs that cause infidelity, like pantheism and incarnation. For example, after they recite the Athkaar and supplications they spread a white cloth and claim that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, comes and sits on it.
Thus, praying behind such adherents people is unlawful, unless there are no other Imaams available to pray behind and there is no alternative but to pray behind them. However, if the Imaam is known to believe in incarnation, pantheism or any other religious innovation that causes disbelief, then praying behind him is impermissible. Be aware that many of them do adopt such beliefs.
