Question:

Asalamualaikum, I had the bad habit of cursing whenever I got angry.I have sincerely repented to Allah seeking forgiveness and stopped it completely. Is it possible for the curse of a person to cause someone's death even if one did not intend that? Is death predestined in the womb? Thank you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The curse means being repelled from the Mercy of Allaah, and cursing someone is supplicating for him to be repelled from the Mercy of Allaah, but cursing does not mean supplicating for him to die.

We have already issued Fatwa 86030 clarifying that cursing is not a characteristic of a Muslim and that it is forbidden to curse.

As regards whether or not death is predestined when the person is still a foetus in the womb of his mother, then the answer is yes, as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said when speaking about what is decreed for the foetus while in the womb of his mother: “…his provision (his earnings), his life span, his actions (deeds) and whether he will be a loser (in Hellfire) or a happy person (in Paradise).[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Allaah Says (what means): {Indeed, all things We created with predestination.}[Quran 54:49].

For more benefit on the predestination of death and its reasons, please refer to Fatwa 83292.

Allaah Knows best.
