Question:

What is the ruling on a girl who gives her home address to a young man so that he would come to propose to her for marriage without informing her family that she gave him the address?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Marriage is one of the objectives of the Islamic religion as it helps preserve the progeny and protects one's dignity and honour. However, in Islam, ends do not justify means. If the purpose is lawful and noble, then the means to it should also be permissible and noble. This girl giving her home address to this young man in order to arrive at this permissible objective, which is marriage, must be in a permissible way, through one of her Mahaarim (non-marriageable relatives) for instance. It is not permissible for her to give him her home address by illegal means, like meeting him, being in seclusion with him or by any other forbidden manner, as this could lead to forbidden matters.

To conclude, the girl should use permissible ways in order to achieve the objective and avoid any forbidden means.

Allaah Knows best.
