Question:

My wife is very ill and she was admitted to the hospital, we cannot find a type of blood for from the Muslims, are we allowed to take or buy a blood from the non-Muslim or Kafir? We knew that they are not clean; they are eating pork and drinking Alcohol. Please Advise.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already issued the ruling on donating blood in Fatwa 83172, and we mentioned that this is permissible in case of a necessity with some conditions. We also clarified in the above Fatwa that there is no harm in asking blood from Muslims or non-Muslims. However, it is not permissible to pay money for it unless the blood donator conditions it, in which case it is permissible to pay him for the necessity. The blood which is donated is impure and forbidden, and it is not permissible to seek treatment with it in principle, but it is permissible here for the necessity. Since the blood is impure in principle, then there is no need to say that the non-Muslims eat impurities or drink impurities. The impurity of a non-Muslim is not physical but moral because of their disbelief, and this is the meaning of the saying of Allaah (what means): {Verily, the disbelievers (are impure)}[Quran 9:28].

Allaah Knows best.
