All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
The obedience of parents is an obligation if they do not order you to disobey Allaah, as the Prophet said: "Pleasing the parents is pleasing Allaah and making them angry is making Allaah angry." [At-Tirmithi] So if one of your parents or both of them order you to follow a specific permissible study, you have to obey them in order to seek the Pleasure of Allaah and their pleasure and avoid the Anger of Allaah and their anger. Generally, a father is naturally predisposed to love what benefits his child and tries to achieve that for him/her. He is older than him/her and more experienced in worldly matters. Therefore, it is most likely that the father's opinion is better than yours. Even if you dislike the kind of studies that your father wants you to do, this does not mean that your opinion is the correct one. Allaah says (which means): {… and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you.}[2:216]. However, if you think that your opinion is the appropriate, correct and beneficial one, then you can endeavour with wisdom to convince your father about your wish and explain to him the advantages of such study and seek the help of someone who can talk to him about this matter and convince him, as achieving your desire (if that does not involve any prohibition) is an important factor for success.
Allaah knows best.
