Question:

Is it true that the first hair of the new-born baby should not be thrown in the garbage, after shaving them off? Kindly advice.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We are not aware of any statement of the scholars specifying that it is disliked to throw the hair of the new-born baby in a bin. However, the majority of the jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them   stated that it is desirable to bury the hair and nails that a person cuts off whether it is of a new-born or any other person.

At-Tabaraani may Allaah have mercy upon him reported that Waa'il Ibn Hujr may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to order the people to bury their hair and nails. This Hadeeth is Dha'eef [weak]; however, many scholars acted according to it and many righteous predecessors used to do so.

Moreover, Imaam Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked whether the hair and nails that a person cuts off should be buried or thrown away in the bin, and he replied that it should be buried. He was asked: "Do you have any evidence about this?" He replied: "Ibn 'Umar may Allaah be pleased with him used to bury them."

In addition to this, Imaam An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "It is desirable to bury whatever one cuts off from his hair or nails. This was narrated by Ibn 'Umar may Allaah be pleased with him and this is the opinion of our school [Shaafi'i School]".

Based on the above narrations, the jurists are of the view that it is desirable to bury the hair of a new-born or any other person.

Allaah Knows best.
