Question:

I am from Asmera, the capital of Eritrea. My question is about food. Is it Halal or Haram to eat meat slaughtered other than the name of Allah?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Any meat of an animal that is slaughtered by mentioning other than the Name of Allah at the time of slaughtering is forbidden. Allah Says while mentioning the forbidden kinds of food (what means): {Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah…} [Quran 5: 3]

The ruling does not change even if the slaughterer is a Muslim or a person from the People of the Book. This is the opinion of the Four Schools of Fiqh, and we do not know any disagreement concerning this ruling.

Allah knows best.
