Question:

I want to know the wisdom of marriage?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Islam encourages marriage due to its sublime wisdom and benefits that are useful and bring good to the individual himself, to the Muslim Ummah as a whole, and to the humankind in general.

Among them are:

1- The sexual instinct is one of the strongest and fiercest instincts. It always insists on the person to find a domain for it. As long as it is not satisfied, the human being becomes overwhelmed by anxiety and disturbance, and may then be led to doing evil deeds. Marriage is the best natural and the most suitable state to satisfy and gratify this instinct. This fulfillment, in turn, leads to calmness in body and tranquility in soul, prevents the sight from looking at what is forbidden and procures sympathy with what Allah, the Great and Almighty, has made lawful. Allah Says (what means): {And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.} [Quran 30:21]

2- Marriage is the lawful relationship to have children, increase the progeny, and continue life with the protection of genealogy, which is given a special care by Islam. The abundance of offspring is good for both the general welfare, and the private benefits. This is why many nations are very keen on increasing their population. Some even give promotional gifts for those whose number of children is bigger. In the recent times, it was said: 'But the dignity is for the one who has the greater number of offspring'

3- The paternity and maternity instinct grows and becomes complete in the shade of childhood. In addition, feelings of sympathy, love and cordiality, which are part and parcel of one's humanity, grow in the incubator of matrimonial life.

4- Marriage, by dint of Allah, brings the good religious family into existence, which is indeed the first brick in the building of the religious society and well-qualified Ummah.

5- Finally, Marriage results in the correlation of families, strengthening the ties of love among them as well as the social relationships, such as marriage, which Islam blesses, supports and encourages.
