Reading Qur'an in Arabic or other language

Question:

Reading a translation of the Holy Qu'ran is considered what? Must the Qu'ran be read in Arabic to be considered a form of worship? Is reading it in English considered to be non-worship and just mere reading?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

It is forbidden to read the Qur'an in any language other than Arabic. Its words should not be read as Qur'an if they are written in any alphabetical transcription other than the Arabic one, nor could they be read for worshipping if not written in Arabic. But it is lawful to translate its meaning into any other language and to read the translation in order to understand it better. However, this translation is not Qur'an itself. Reading the Qur'an in Arabic is made easy for anybody who has a good will. Allah Says (Interpretation of meaning): (And we have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember, then is there any that will remember 'or receive admonition'). [54:17]. Allah knows best.
