Question:

Is it true that druing the era of the Umayyad Caliphate, people used to gather after the Friday sermon or prayer and criticize ‘Ali, may Allaah be pleased with him, harshly regarding political affairs?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allah will not ask us about what the people did at the time of the Umayyads or others. Allah says (what means): {That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.} [Quran 2:134]

Abu Bakr Al-Jazaa’iri said in Aysar At-Tafaaseer, “On the Day of Resurrection, you will not be asked about the deeds of others, but you will be asked about your own deeds and will be rewarded according to them (your deeds); so avoid argumentation and do whatever will benefit you in your Hereafter, which is the correct faith and righteous deeds.

Allah knows best.
