Using software named after false deities
1-12-2014 | IslamWeb
Question:
Assalamu alaikum, is it permissible to use softwares that are named after those who are worshipped other than Allah (e.g. zeus, buddha,etc..)?How about those that were programmed using programming languages named after gods or the like of other religions (e.g. delphi(in greek mythology) programming language)? Some softwares are released in time with christmas and the developers relate the release with christmas(christmas version) or the version number is 6.6.6 and the developer relate it to the devil's number in the bible(e.g. satanic release), is it halal to use them? If I said or thought something bad about the software(free software), is it still halal for me to use it?or do I need to seek forgiveness first from the author before I can use it again?
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Software programs being named after the false deities and the like does not prevent using them. Saying or thinking something bad about software programs also does not affect the permissibility of using them.
Allaah Knows best.
