Question:

One time I had a beard and then I shaved it off I joked to a freind that I shaved it off because my wife said she would kick me out of the house if I didn't shave it off( this was just a joke and she didn't say this) did this joke have any affect on the validity of my marraige

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This statement has no effect on the validity of your marriage but you are sinful for two reasons:

Firstly: shaving the beard, as this is forbidden as we clarified in Fataawa 81978 and 84474.

Secondly: telling a lie, which is forbidden and a grave major sin.

Therefore, you should take the initiative to repent. If a Muslim wants to joke with his friend, this is permissible but he should only speak the truth. Indeed, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to joke but he would only speak the truth. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Companions asked the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): “You are joking with us?” He replied: “I only say that which is true.” [At-Tirmithi]

Allaah Knows best.
