Saying the Iqaamah of the missed prayer and it is performed before the current prayer

Question:

It happens that I do not perform Al-‘Asr prayer on time. I make up for it after the time of Al-Maghrib prayer but before performing Maghrib. Should I say the Iqaamah once with the intention of performing both Al-‘Asr and Al-Maghrib prayers or should I say the Iqaamah before Al-‘Asr then again before Al-Maghrib? Thank you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

What you should do in such a case is say the Iqaamah for Al-‘Asr prayer, perform it, then say the Iqaamah for Al-Maghrib and then perform it. You should do this for any prayer which you perform alone whether in its specified time or after it.

We would like to remind you, dear brother, that unless there is an excuse such as forgetfulness or sleep, delaying prayer till its specified time is over is impermissible and an explicit contravention of the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.} [Quran 4:103] Prayers have specified times that were determined by Allaah The Exalted. Therefore, they should not be delayed till their times are over. Also, the doer of this act is included under the generalized verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {So woe to those who pray. [But] who are heedless of their prayer.} [Quran 107: 4-5] This verse refers to those who delay it past its specified time. What is understood from your question, may Allaah pardon us all, is that you also neglect the congregational prayer for you asked: "Should I say the Iqaamah once?" Thus, be keen, may Allaah protect you, on performing your prayers on time and be keen on the congregational prayer to attain the great reward resulting therefrom.

Allaah Knows best.
