Taking commission for helping people in school and college admissions

Question:

asalaamalekum i want to know that if some one ask me to help in admission to some college or school then i help him as my charge i use to take commission is it halal or not as i use to go school and also makes many rounds to school for admission for i had to spend money and also time for it. please tell me the answer as soon as possible.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Since you are making a physical effort and spending money in rendering this service, in addition to using your status in doing so, it is permissible for you to take a fixed commission for that according to the most preponderant opinion of the scholars .

However, it is not permissible to get paid for using one’s status only according to the opinion which we believe to be the preponderant opinion of the scholars regarding taking a price for using one’s status.
