All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
There is no religious impediment that prevents a husband from asking his wife about this matter and this should not make the wife angry as the matter is very easy. However, the husband should avoid what angers his wife. In any case, each spouse should tolerate the mistakes of the other if any, and his/her heart should accept such shortcomings.
Indeed, it is confirmed that the Prophet asked his wives such a question when there was a need for it. ‘Aa’ishah said: ''The Prophet entered upon me when I was in Sarif [a name of a valley] and he found me crying and he said: ''What is wrong with you? Have you menstruated? I said: “Yes.” Then, he said: “This is a thing which Allaah has ordained for the daughters of Aadam, so do what all the pilgrims do with the exception of the Tawaaf (circumambulation) around the House [i.e. the Ka’bah]." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Also, Umm Salamah said: “While I was laying with the Prophet under a single woolen sheet, I menstruated, so I slipped away and put on the clothes of menses. He [the Prophet ] said: “Have you menstruated?” I replied: “Yes.” So, he called me and made me lie with him under the same sheet.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Allaah Knows best.
