Question:

As Salam Alaykum,
Let me know the aunthenticity of following incident/story from Tajkiratul Huffaz book.
Aisha (R.A) said my father Abu Bakr (R.A) had collection of five hundred Ahadith. One night I saw he was very uneasy, changing sides (on bed). I also become tense after seeing this, I said "Do you have problem or heard anything that made you tense". Thus he(Abu Bakr) spent whole night in tension (uneasiness) and in the morning he said "Bring that Ahadith that I had kept" and I brought the same. The he (Abu Bakr R.A) burned it , I said why you have burnt(Ahadith) and he said " I fear (predict) that if I die and those remains with me, which contains(narrations) what I have heard from others which I feel suitable(correct) but in reality if it is not and those narrations may have mistakes and if it backfires me "

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This Hadeeth is not authentic as clarified by Ath-Thahabi may Allaah have mercy upon him in the same book (Tathkiratul Huffaath). After quoting the Hadeeth, he said: “This Hadeeth is not authentic, Allaah knows best.

Moreover, Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “The way of reporting this Hadeeth is Ghareeb (i.e. a single reporter is found relating it at some stage of Isnaad [chain of narrators] and ‘Ali ibn Saalih (the narrator) is unknown.

Allaah Knows best.
