Ruling on the nursing mother who abandons fasting in Ramadan

Question:

I have two questions. I am a mother of twins and cannot fast in Ramadhaan due to suckling them. When should I make up for the missed days of fasting? Are there any Hadeeth narrated on the authority of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, regarding the woman who gives birth to twins?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

If you broke fasting in Ramadan to suckle your twins, you should know that this was not permissible unless the fasting was harmful either to you or to your children. Otherwise, you are sinful and you must repent to Allaah. Either way, you are required, whenever you are able, to make up for the days of fasting that you missed.

If you broke fasting fearing for your children only, you would be required to make up for these days, and the twins' father is required to give the expiation of feeding a poor person for each day. This is the opinion that we adopt here in Islamweb.

As for your question about a Hadeeth concerning a woman who gives birth to twins, we do not know of any relevant Hadeeth. Nevertheless, there are many proofs indicating the virtues of taking care of and bringing up one's children properly.

We ask Allaah to help you to correctly bring up your children and teach them the finest morals.

Allaah Knows best.
