Question:

it is said that in it is sunnah that women can ask for money before marriage other than maher (which is obligatory a man should give to his wife) can u give me some expalnation on this.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is confirmed in the Quran that it is permissible to give a large amount of money as a dowry; Allaah Says (what means): {and you have given one of them a Qintar (of gold i.e. a great amount as dowry)}[Quran 4:20] Furthermore, there is nothing in the Sunnah that prohibits increasing the dowry above a particular amount. Therefore, a woman may condition on her husband to give her a dowry which is greater than the dowry of the women who are at the same social status as hers.

However, it is proven in the Sunnah that a blessed woman is the one whose engagement is made easy, whose dowry is made easy, and whose childbearing is made easy.

‘Urwah ibn Az-Zubayr may Allaah be pleased with him the narrator of this Prophetic narration from ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her said: “I say from my own words: “A big dowry is the first sign that the woman is going to have an unhappy marital life.
