Question:
Can I give food to the orphanage on account of the 50th wedding anniversary of my parents one or two days before/after. SALAAM.
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Donating food for an orphanage is a good act by which a person gets closer to Allah; Allah Says (what means): {And they feed, for the love of Allah, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive…}[Quran 76:8]
‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that a man asked the Prophet : "What is the best act to be done in Islam? He [the Prophet ] said: “To feed (the poor) and to greet with Salaam those whom you know and those whom you don’t know.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
However, linking this act of obedience with the wedding anniversary of the parents has no foundation in Islam. But if you do that out of celebrating this day and taking it as an ‘Eed, then you should avoid doing it because some scholars are of the view that wedding anniversary is an innovation. Hence, you may do this act of charity without linking it to that occasion at all. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 90174.
Allah Knows best.
